Post-Placement Reports are required before finalization (typically domestic adoptions). Post-Adoption Reports are required after finalization (typically international adoptions).
Both involve home visits by a social worker to support your family and ensure your child's well-being. These reports provide assurance that the adoption is in the child's best interest.
- Colorado families working with us: We'll continue providing services after placement or finalization.
- Out-of-state families working with us: Your home study agency's social worker will complete these requirements.
Domestic Adoption
The court in the child's birth state determines post-placement supervision requirements until finalization.
Colorado requirements:
- Minimum six-month waiting period after placement before finalization
- Home visit with a social worker within two weeks of arriving home (required for all Colorado residents, regardless of where the adoption is finalized)
International Adoption
Most international adoptions are finalized abroad, so your child arrives as a U.S. citizen. Each country has specific post-adoption reporting requirements—compliance is essential to keep adoption programs open for future families.
"The US Department of State strongly urges all adoptive parents to take these obligations seriously and comply with post-adoption and post-placement requirements in a timely manner. Failure to do so may put at risk the ability of future U.S. families and foreign children to be matched. Your cooperation will contribute to the country of origin's history of positive experiences with U.S. citizen adoptive parents."
Revalidation (International Adoption Only)
Revalidation legally recognizes your foreign adoption in the United States. All international adoptive families must complete this through their county court, with requirements varying by jurisdiction.
